cash reserve ratio North West Blood Bikes Service

This charity saves lives by providing out-of-hours transport of urgently needed blood, drugs, human tissues and other medical requirements between hospitals and blood transfusion banks in the north west of England.




Riders from North West Blood Bikes not only make a vital difference to people's lives but they save the NHS thousands of pounds that would have been spent on taxis and other delivery services.

The service was established in January 2011 and by March 2012 had carried out its 1,000th urgent journey. 70 riders, all volunteers, drive throughout the night, working every single day of the year, responding to calls for assistance from hospitals across a large geographical area including Manchester, Merseyside and Lancashire - from Chester in the south to the Lake District in the north.

The volunteers all share a passion for biking but also helping others. Within the biking team is a former paramedic, a driving instructor and a retired police officer.
A further 79 volunteers provide important call handling and administrative support to the group.

They also help to raise funds and encourage donations to pay for insurance and fuel. In August last year, the project received a grant of £9,600 from the Big Lottery Fund to buy a new motorbike for its work in Chorley, Preston, Ormskirk and Southport.
